Writing the Thesis
Statement
Observe this example:
Topic: The benefits of tourism on the Jamaican Economy
During
the past couple of years Jamaica has been benefiting from tourism. The
government of Jamaica has been investing billions of dollars in the
tourism sector. Tourists usually come to Jamaica because of our beautiful
sunshine, our culture and our infrastructure (heritage sites, hotels etc.). However, the main benefits of the Tourism
sector in Jamaica have been the providing of foreign exchange and the creation
of jobs.
Do you
see how the thesis statement has been incorporated as the final sentence of the
introductory paragraph?
What is a thesis?
According to an hand out done by "Mrs Aisha Harris - Parker". A thesis is a general statement of the main idea of an
essay. A good thesis sentence is a general statement about what you’re main
ideas are, how they are related, and why they are significant; it should be
specific and concrete.
It sets the limits of your topic, clarifies the direction
and purpose of the paper and they are usually informative and should suggest a
skeleton outline. If it does not meet these requirements, it needs more work.
Usually it is the last sentence of your introductory
paragraph. It serves as a guideline or model to follow as you write your paper
/ speech.
-
When you have selected your topic and done your
preliminary research, the next step is to clarify what you want to present to
your listeners or readers and give your ideas focus.
Example of an Expository (explanatory) thesis statement:
The life of the typical college student is characterized by
time spent studying, attending classes and socializing with peers.
What follows should then explain how students spend their time studying,
attending classes and socializing with peers.
